Understanding the types of Cloud Deployment Models

Edge computing is a type of distributed computing that brings compute and data storage resources closer to the edge of the network, or to where data is being generated and used. As such, it requires careful consideration when it comes to deployment models. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the most popular edge computing deployment models.

The On-premises model is one of the most traditional approaches to edge computing and involves deploying an onsite server which provides edge compute resources. This solution offers excellent control and flexibility but often comes with high upfront costs and can be more difficult to manage than other solutions.

Public cloud services, such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Microsoft Azure and many more, offer great levels of scalability and access to a wide range of advanced tools and services — making them ideal for those looking for rapid deployment in a wide range of scenarios.

When using the public cloud for edge computing solutions, organizations can deploy either a Hybrid Cloud or a Multi-Cloud setup. A Hybrid Cloud approach leverages both on-premises and public cloud infrastructures to provide the best combination of scalability, performance, cost efficiency and security. Alternatively, Multi-Cloud lets organizations take advantage of multiple public clouds in order to reduce risk while taking advantage of different pricing options available from different providers.

Organizations that need secure cloud deployments also have two additional options: Community Clouds or Private Clouds. Community Clouds are public clouds that are used by specific communities or particular geographic regions with similar regulations around security and privacy — providing access for approved organizations within their communities only.
